Ask for Better Food in Schools

Click here to send your legislator a message.  A letter is already included; however, I've modified it slightly (below).  Please feel free to copy the letter below and paste it into the website. THANK YOU for your support!!!

I’m concerned about child obesity, diabetes and cognitive problems (like ADD/ADHD), all of which are largely due to diet. All of these diseases greatly impact our health care system and the future of our economy, yet are easily preventable with proper nutrition.

It’s time to take action, starting with the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act. As a voter in your district, I urge you to invest at least $1 billion more per year, strengthen nutrition standards and support farm-to-school programs.

Right now, schools receive $2.68 for each lunch served – only about $1 of which goes towards ingredients. As a result, most schools have to rely on the cheap processed foods that are fueling the obesity and diabetes epidemics.

Our children are our future! To help America's children get back on the track towards good health, the Child Nutrition Act must:

1. Increase funding for school meals by at least $1 billion per year. President Obama’s budget adds only $1 billion, which is an important step forward but will need to be split up between many critical programs. At most, schools would receive 10 to 20 cents more per lunch, which falls short of what they need to serve wholesome, nutritious food. If you’re serious about ending obesity, you’ll give schools $1 more per lunch now and save hundreds of billions in health care costs down the line.

2. Strengthen nutrition standards for all the food sold at school, including the food sold in school vending machines. NO hydrogenated oils. NO high fructose corn syrup. NO artificial food colorings. NO preservatives, such as BHA, BHT, MSG, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, sodium nitrate or nitrite or TBHQ.

3. Enact $10 million per year in mandatory funding for farm-to-school programs. Locally spent food dollars create local jobs, and farm-to-school programs also help schools plant gardens and teach healthy eating.

When you reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, please keep America's kids in mind and put their needs first. Thank you for your support.
